Tale of a 6th Grade Christmas

The writing prompt I choose this week from mamakat was to Write about a memory related to a holiday and boy do I remember this holiday well!

Christmas morning started off like every morning does ... 3 excited kids up as soon as the light filled our rooms running to the living room to see what "Santa" brought us. As we got to the living room it was still pretty dark (mainly due to the thick curtains my mom had at the time) the lights from the tree were twinkling, and for a few seconds I remember thinking that this was my favorite part of Christmas. Then we saw what Santa left.

There in front of the TV were 2 identical bikes with my brother and sisters name on them and for a minute I was very upset "where's mine?" I said. I heard my mom say to my dad she doesnt see it yet in laughing voice. I started to scan the room and there it was the coolest, bestest Christmas present I had ever got, a brand new stereo!! You remember the ones with the wooden stands that had a record player, radio, and tape deck it was beautiful and it was all mine! I was so excited I think I let "Santa" know that I was VERY VERY happy with my gift.

After all the presents were opened I moved my stereo to my room that I shared at the time with my sister and found the perfect spot for it and instructed my sister that if I caught her grubby paws on it I would have to hurt her. (yeah yeah I was that kind of big sister but in my defense she was always breaking my stuff.)

The day wore on and we were all doing this and that trying to avoid the kitchen so mom wouldnt make us help cook dinner. I remember I left my room just to get a drink and I got picked to set the table, while I was setting the table mom was pulling out the turkey for some reason I guess she thought a 20 pound turkey in an aluminum baking pan was a good idea ... can you see where I'm going with this? Thats right the aluminum pan bent in the middle and all that hot turkey juice spilled over the sides and landed on my moms foot some how I have no idea how she didnt drop the turkey but she screamed and everyone in the house ran into the kitchen to see what happened. We didnt really understand at the time that my mom was really hurt we thought geez just wipe it off and lets eat already (I know we were some sensitive kids) we figured if she was really hurt dad would take her to the hospital who knew about insurance and stuff ... not me ... appearantly we didnt have any back then. I remember my dad coming out to finish up supper and mom finally came limping out of her room a little bit later and we had Christmas dinner.

I remember my moms foot not healing for the longest time and every year my mom still calls to remind us NOT to use aluminum baking pans to cook our turkeys in just in case we forgot that Christmas. Not likely!

Oh dear...your poor mom. A couple of Christmases ago my sister in law accidently dropped the gravy boat on her daughter's leg. It gave my neice a nasty burn. Darn those Christmas turkeys; they can be mean sometimes. (But they're ever so tasty.)

Oww. That's all I can say. And she must have been tough to just deal with it.

Yiks! That would have hurt. The anticipation of Christmas morning is probably some of my favorite holiday memories!

Every Thanksgiving, my husband or his family brings up the story when his grandpa did the same thing.

And about the stereo, I got the very same kind when I was in 6th grade!! It came with a narrow gray-flecked colored stand that was really just pressed wood. And it had the record player on top, too. So funny! I think it was probably one of the last years that they made the kinds with record players. And I never once used the record part. But alas, mine didn't work right so "santa" had to return it to Walmart, and I had to settle for one with out a stand. Sorry, for rambling on, it just struck me how important that silly stereo was! lol. Great post!

Oh your poor mom! I dropped a hot kernel of corn on my bare foot the other night and nearly lost my marbles! I can't imagine a pan full of turkey juice!

I love your blog, by the way. I just found it and also wanted to thank you and your family. My husband and I are big on supporting the military and are very appreciative of not just the sacrifices the soldiers make but their families too. :)

big sisters ALWAYS have the right to tell younger ones to keep their lil paws off of our stuff. its not our fault that just by being born first we became incredibly cool and had the best stuff. its a curse we just have to live with...

oh no! having watched my sister endure a "butter burn" after microwaving it, I know all about hot oil burns and how horrible they can be - your poor mama! hopefully nobody has to repeat that incident!

OUCH!!!! Your poor poor Mom!! I bet that absolutely killed. But yay for your new stereo...I had a record player that I drug everywhere too. There's just something to be said about being able to control your own music. Freedom!!

I figured the story would end with your sister doing something to your new stereo. Your poor mom, that's awful!
